  1. Close to Home: Family Activity Night/Junior Police Academy

October 22, 2019, 6:30 PM - 7:00 PM @ Manitowoc Public Library Balkansky Community Room

“Close to Home”—a companion series to the popular “Great Decisions” foreign policy presentations—is a domestic issues series that explores a range of topics that have the potential to impact the daily lives of people within our community. Having addressed that police officers are regular people like everyone else earlier in October with “Storytime with Manitowoc Police Department,” this companion piece aims to get our comfortable with officers while they’re doing their job. To get this across, we’re playfully having them take on some “training” to help them to better understand their duties. This installment of Family Activity Night will take place at Manitowoc Public Library in the Balkansky Community Room on Tuesday, October 22 at 6:30 PM. Be a FAN of the library as parents and children participate together in a variety of activities including stories, movies, art projects and special guests. Each Family Activity Night lasts approximately 30 minutes. Admission is FREE!!!

  3. Close to Home: Understanding Organ Donation with Susan Angel Miller

October 24, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Manitowoc Public Library Balkansky Community Room

Close to Home”—a companion series to the popular “Great Decisions” foreign policy presentations—is a domestic issues series that explores a range of topics that have the potential to impact the daily lives of people within our community. One such matter is organ donation. However, while uncomfortable at first, it’s important to remember that organ donation literally provides the gift of life. Susan Angel Miller—a Milwaukee-based career volunteer whose life changed as a result of a traumatic event in her family—brings the panel discussion “Understanding Organ Donation” to Manitowoc Public Library. Panel members will include a transplant nurse, and organ procurement coordinator, Susan herself, and, hopefully, a donor recipient. Not an easy discussion to start, but most definitely a necessary one. Another Must-See program at MPL!

  4. Close to Home: It’s OK to Not Be OK, with Jeff Ditzenberger

October 28, 2019, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Manitowoc Public Library Balkansky Community Room

Close to Home” is a domestic issues series that explores a range of topics that have the potential to impact the daily lives of people within our community. “It’s OK To Not Be OK,” being presented on Monday, October 28 at 69 PM in MPL’s Balkansky Community Room, is the culmination of one person’s story of a battle with mental health challenges. Jeff—who long ago set fire to an abandoned structure with the intention of never leaving–now speaks to groups about the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and talking about suicide, most especially in our rural communities, where stress and anxiety are at all-time highs in the farming industry. “It’s OK” addresses how a bad day doesn’t make a bad life. Jeff also discusses how to recognize signs of depression in others and how to find and use coping methods. Jeff has been seen on local news programs southern Wisconsin, as well as on HBOs “Vice News.” You won't want to miss this incredible program.
