1. When are cemetery clean up dates?

Evergreen Cemetery spring clean up is from April 15 to May 15. All winter items must be removed by April 15th. Items not picked up may be disposed of at the discretion of Evergreen Cemetery. Summer items may be added beginning on May 15.

Fall clean up is from October 15 to November 15. All summer items must be removed by October 15th. Items not picked up may be disposed of at the discretion of Evergreen Cemetery. Winter items may be added beginning on November 15.

2. Can I look online to see which spaces are available for purchase?

Because our inventory of available spaces changes frequently, we do not publish this information on the website. Additionally, we prefer to have people choose spaces in person so they can see what the area looks like around their spaces. Some people might prefer trees, being close to the road so they don’t have to walk far, being close to a waterline for watering flowers, etc. Although spaces can be sold on a walk-in basis, we prefer that people call ahead so as not to disturb funeral services. If coming to the cemetery is not possible, we will sell the space by e-mail, fax or phone.

3. How can I find out where my loved one is buried?

On the home page for Evergreen Cemetery, click on the “List of Burials” link on the left-hand side of the page. When the page comes up, click on a second “list of burials” link. This is a large .pdf file, which requires the use of Adobe Acrobat. In the far right column is the location of the burial which is listed (from largest area to smallest area) by Section, Block, Lot and Space. Write this location down on a piece of paper.

Individuals whose names are on a memorial marker, but who are not buried here, will not be on this list. Since record keeping was very poor in the 1800’s, please contact our office directly if you cannot find what you are looking for. Oftentimes, they were listed by their nationality (ex. a Norwegian child), occupation (ex. a sailor), or association with someone else in the City (ex. Mr. Dueno’s friend).

Once you have the location, you can then access the maps on the City’s website. Click on the “Cemetery Map” link on the left-hand side of the page. When the page comes up, click on a second “cemetery map” link. This will bring up an overview map of the cemetery. Put your mouse on the letter of the section you are looking for and left click the letter to access a close-up map of the section showing the blocks and lots. The larger areas are the blocks, and the smaller areas are the lots. There are six spaces in most of the lots, with one being the southern-most space and 6 being the northern-most spaces. The spaces are not listed on the close-up map.

4. What do I need to do to have my loved ones cremains interred?

Please contact our office at your earliest convenience to schedule a tentative burial date and time, so as to avoid scheduling conflicts with other burials. We require a minimum of one working day’s notice in order to have the grave prepared. If a space has not been purchased previously, then we will require the space to be chosen and paid for a minimum of one working day prior to the burial.

We will also require the size of the cremation urn or vault, payment in full for the opening and closing of the grave at the time of burial, and a copy of a cremation or death certificate. If the death occurred in Wisconsin in the last 12 months, you may be able to have the funeral director fax us a copy of the completed Report for Final Disposition. Burials may occur between 7 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Mondays through Saturdays; however additional fees apply for Saturday burials and for burials on any day of the week which occur after 2:30 P.M.

5. What are those gray and black granite structures near the old Sexton House?

The outdoor, free-standing structures are called columbariums. There are 112 niches in the columbarium and each niche holds a maximum of two human cremations. For protection, the niche is covered with a granite shutter and a granite panel covers the shutter. The panel can then be engraved with standard inscriptions at no additional charge. Bronze emblems and/or vases can be added for an additional fee.

6. What is in the old Sexton House by the main entrance to the cemetery on North 18th Street?

The City currently leases the building to the Dramm Corporation, which uses it for administrative offices. The lease is set to expire in 2015.
