MARITIME METRO TRANSIT

Maritime Metro Transit (MMT) originated on January 1, 1978 when the City of Manitowoc took over the operation from a private operator. System funds are generated from four major sources: Federal and State Government subsidies (60% to 67%), local funding and fare box revenue.

MMT operates Monday through Friday from 5:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Saturdays from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. The System consists of six fixed routes. Five of the fixed routes services Manitowoc and one services Two Rivers with a connecting transfer point in Manitowoc.

In late 1999 Bay Lakes Regional Planning Commission started a Transportation Development Plan to address the current and future needs of the Transit system and their customers. This state mandated report was completed in the fall of 2002. It recommended changes to the existing routes and MMT’s hours of operation. According to the plan, MMT will expand hours during the weekdays, add another route to achieve better coverage in Manitowoc, add route 5 to Saturday service and eliminate the Transfer Point at the Shopko plaza. Elimination of the Transfer Point at the Shopko plaza will allow all routes to come back to our main Transfer Point on South 11th street (behind Pizza Hut). This will drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to get to the west and north sides of Manitowoc. These changes are currently scheduled to go into affect in January, 2006.

In June of 2004 MMT will be replacing 5 of its aging buses that were purchased in 1988 and 1992. These new buses will be shorter (by 6 feet) and we expect operational savings because of this. The new buses will also make it much easier and faster to secure wheelchairs and other mobility devices. The City of Manitowoc will be responsible to pay 20% of the cost of these new buses with the Federal Government paying for the other 80%.
