Stormwater Management

Importance of Stormwater Management

Water that flows on the surface of the land and streets in an urban area, ultimately ends up in local streams, rivers and Lake Michigan. This means that any pollutants picked up by this water such as oil and grease, chemicals, nutrients, metals and bacteria also end up in the waterways we use for swimming, fishing and providing drinking water. The storm sewer system in the City of Manitowoc does not lead to the Sewage Treatment Facility.

If local citizens dump waste oil, gas, pesticides, fertilizers, grass clippings or pet waste in the street, they are ultimately polluting our local waters. Dumping of any type is considered an Illicit Discharge and is a violation of City Ordinance (Chapter 30). Careless management of construction sites in this fast developing city are also contributors to poor water quality. Many of us have had our recreation plans interrupted with the closing of local beaches this past summer.

This page was created to provide you with the information you need to make changes in your daily habits that can help keep pollutants out of our stormwater. There is also information on what the City of Manitowoc is doing to help keep our waters clean.
