Regular and timely maintenance of city streets not only saves taxpayer money in the short run, it contributes to the overall economic development of the city and can increase the funds flowing through the local economy.
Reconstruction of roads in an urban setting is estimated at $2,295,000 per mile of 2 lane street. We are only able to reconstruct streets by combining State Aids, local tax money, and assessments on the affected property owners.
We would much prefer to spend a little time, more frequently extending the life of our streets. To this end we maintain a crack-filling crew whose job it is to seal fragmenting pavement so that water cannot enter to street pavement. Water undermines the road bed and breaks up pavement as it freezes and thaws. We estimate we add 10-15 years to the life of our roads through out effort. That translates to extending the useful life nearly 33%.
