Ball Python

Animal Summary

The odd couple of the zoo's Educational Center are Felix and Oscar the two male ball pythons.  Felix was born in 1991 and is dark, while Oscar was born in 1984 and is lighter in color.  They came to the zoo in 2000 and were donated by the Racine Zoo in Racine, Wisconsin.

  • All snakes have more than 100 vertebrae and some possess over 400.
  • Wide scales on a snake's underside aid in locomotion.
  • Snakes receive ground-borne vibrations by pressing their lower jaw to the ground.  The vibrations are conducted to the stapes bone and on the inner ear.

Ball python numbers are stable at this time.

Collection of ball pythons for the pet trade is reducing their numbers in the wild.
