The Rahr-West Art Museum is pleased to present Essential Creativity: The Self-Taught Art of Rudy Rotter, an art exhibit featuring the work of legendary Manitowoc artist Rudy Rotter. The works, in a variety of two- and three-dimensional media, illustrate major themes of Rotter’s work, including family and humanity. His work often incorporates found objects, either scavenged or gifted by the ever-evolving manufacturing corporations of Manitowoc. The Essential Creativity: The Self-Taught Art of Rudy Rotter exhibit will be open December 8, 2024 – February 16, 2025.
Please join the museum for an opening reception on Sunday, December 15, 2024 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. A 2:00 pm presentation will feature the comments of co-curators Diana Bolander (Assistant Director at the Rahr-West Art Museum) and Randy Rotter (collector and Rudy Rotter’s son). The event and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
Rudy Rotter created art in Manitowoc for five decades, beginning in the 1950s. He created art in conjunction with raising his family and running his dental practice. Later in his life, he opened a Museum of Sculpture in Manitowoc that evolved to hold thousands of his works of art. Beginning with traditional traditions of stone and wood carving and then moving to less strenuous medias of assemblage and free drawing later in his life, his work was and continues to be a celebration of life, creativity, and joy.
The Rahr-West Art Museum is admission-free. Find hours and visitor information at rahrwestartmuseum.org. The Rahr-West Art Museum is a department of the City of Manitowoc.
