Vetter Trailhead includes a 16-car blacktopped parking lot, vault toilet near the parking lot, and access trail to Camp Vits. The access trail was made possible through an agreement between the City of Manitowoc and Woodland Dunes for an easement for a pedestrian trail from Vetter Trailhead to Camp Vits on Woodland Dunes property. Due to a deed restriction and steps, no bicycles are allowed on the trail on Woodland Dunes property. Bicyclists may park a vehicle at Vetter Trailhead and bike on South Parkview Road to the original entrance to Camp Vits Park at 97 South Parkview Road in order to access the mountain bike trail. The first portion of the trail on Woodland Dunes property is ADA-accessible.
A grand opening for Vetter Trailhead is being planned for late summer/early fall of 2022 after various types of signage is installed.
History
In December 2020, the City of Manitowoc purchased 4.16 acres of property for park purposes at 1011 South Parkview Road in Manitowoc, formerly known as the Vetter Farm. A group from Wisconsin Conservation Corps, Inc. (WisCorps) was hired and worked from July 26th through August 6th of 2021 to clear a dirt pedestrian trail from the parking area through Woodland Dunes property to Camp Vits. Vinton Construction worked on the parking lot, including staking and tree cutting. Four bridges from Custom Manufacturing were installed in the winter. Half of this project was funded through a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant with the other half being funded from the City’s capital budget.
